I made a start researching the specific style wanted my book cover to be. I really liked continuous line style, as i had discovered this style through the 50 concepts designing. It is simple but holds a lot of character and was unique, and thats exactly what i wanted the cover to be. I wanted it to attract people, and make them lean in for a closer look, but also for it to be visible and clear when viewing on a shelf. I wanted it to obviously have its own unique style and also appeal to audiences ranging from young to old. I believe this style would help me achieve all of these things if worked and played around with. I have decided to include the oak tree, Will, and Sammy the dog on the cover. The oak tree is mentioned continuously throughout the story, and of course, those two characters are the main protagonists aside from Mister Tom.
These lino prints are finalised designs. They turned out much more effective as i bought some bigger lino pieces so i could work around the letters easier and therefore being able to make them more defined.
I wanted my title to be lino print, so i began experimenting with this technique. However my first attempt didnt turn out how i wanted, as i had made the letter print too small. However it was good to have a practice run.
I began to think about the layout of my book cover and the design itself. I had a lot of things to make sure of when thinking about the design -
- have an imaginative concept
- be an original interpretation of the brief
- be competently executed with strong use of typography
- appeal to the broadest possible audience for the book
- show a good understanding of the marketplace
- have a point of difference from other books that it will be competing against in the market
- be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops
I did some research into specific book covers that involved a silhouette of some kind. I wanted this to be a main part of my own book cover as i think silhouette designs are really effective but not overpowering and too busy.
